Alfredo Protti Biography

Alfredo Protti was born on 26 April 1882 in Bologna and learned the first pictorial principles under the guidance of Domenico Ferri at the Bologna Academy. Protti was the progenitor of modernism in the Bolognese environment, forming himself on the initial glimmers of liberty and on the signs of secessionism. The first contacts with art occurred in the Scapigliatura environment of Bologna and although the artist could be strongly influenced by the various currents that surrounded him, his art remained autonomous. From the beginning of the twentieth century until 1927, Protti participated in various exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale, some exhibitions held in Rome, the Primaverile Fiorentina and the Venice International. Furthermore, he also exhibited at international exhibitions: in Munich, Buenos Aires, San Francisco, Pittsburgh and Barcelona. Among the best-known works by Alfredo Protti we remember: “Fioretta”, “The quilt”, “Interno”, “The balloon”, “Modella”, “Aurora”, “Sonnellino” and many others. Some of these paintings, in addition to being exhibited, were also purchased by the Quadreria Reale and for the Gallery of Modern Art in Rome. Such fame was followed by a period of decline that lasted until 1949. Protti died on 29 April 1949.
