Jan Provoost was born in Mons in 1465 and was one of the leading exponents of early Flemish painting. In addition to painting, he was also a cartographer, engineer and architect. In 1520 he met Albrecht Dürer in Antwerp and there is speculation that a drawing of Dürer's portrait in the National Gallery in London may be by his hand. In his religious works one can see the influences of Gerard David and Hans Memling. In Italy, it is possible to admire some of his works at the Alberoni College in San Lazzaro di Piacenza, where the "Madonna Enthroned" and the "Glass of Flowers" are exhibited. At the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo there is a "Deposition" and finally at the Art Gallery of the Civic Museum of Cremona "The Madonna of the Church" is exhibited. Provoost died in Bruges in 1529.
