Pucci Biography

Emilio Pucci, Marquis of Barsento, born in Naples in 1914, was a well-known Italian fashion designer and politician with a rich history of success. During his undergraduate years at Reed College in Oregon, Pucci distinguished himself as a talented skier and won a scholarship designing the university's ski team uniform. In 1937 he completed his master's degree in social sciences. After traveling around the world on an old ship, he enlisted in the Regia Aeronautica in 1938, serving until 1943. After World War II, Emilio moved to Sestriere and began his career as a ski instructor, but soon returned to Florence. His career exploded when, in December 1947, the well-known American fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar published a shot of him wearing the ski suit he had designed for a friend of his and characterized by fluorescent colours, incredibly modern for the time. This success pushed him to create women's clothes and to open his first boutique in Capri in 1950. In 1951, he participated in the first fashion show organized by Giovanni Battista Giorgini in Florence. The headquarters of his Maison is still located in the ancient family palace in Florence. Emilio Pucci established the aesthetic standards of his Maison and became a point of reference in international fashion until his death in 1992. After his death, the management of the fashion house was entrusted to his daughter Laudomia, until 2000 the Maison was acquired by the LVMH group.
