Leo Putz was born in Merano in 1869 and died in the same city in 1940. He moved to Munich at the age of 16 to attend his first drawing lessons, despite his father's disapproval. He attended the Academy of Munich and later the Académie Julian in Paris, where he studied under the guidance of professors Adolphe Bouguereau and Benjamin Constant. Upon returning to Munich, he joined the group of artists "Scholle" founded by the painter Paul Höcker. Putz's works were influenced by the Munich Secession and mainly focused on the human figure, particularly women. In 1929, he made his first trip to Brazil and spent several years in South America, where his painting took on new impulses. He returned to Gauting in 1933, fleeing to Merano in 1936 to escape the Nazis. In 1940, Leo Putz died in exile in Merano, where he is buried in the cemetery of Gauting.
