Antonio Raggi, born in 1624 in Vico Morcote on Lake Lugano, began his career in Rome in 1635. Between 1643 and 1647, he created his first works, such as stucco angels for Roman churches. He collaborated with artists like Alessandro Algardi and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, participating in important construction sites and receiving prestigious commissions. Between 1655 and 1658, he was active in the decoration of S. Maria del Popolo, and in the following years, he worked on the altar of St. Peter and many other Roman churches. He received numerous assignments and commissions, becoming a highly renowned artist. In 1686, he passed away in Rome due to illness. His final work featured formal experimentation that anticipated eighteenth-century trends. Due to his premature death, he was unable to complete some important projects.
