Dario Ravano Biography

He was born in Casale Monferrato on 28 August 1876 to Genoese parents. He learned the first rudiments of ceramics from the ceramist Giovanni Pardi in Alassio, at the "Società Ceramica Arte" and subsequently collaborated with the "Quaglino e Poggi" factory. After 1902 he was the artistic director of the "Piccone" workshop in Albisola, proving himself to be a decorator of the highest level, both in the traditional Albisola styles and in the emerging Art Nouveau style. In 1908 he worked at the "Poggi" artistic ceramics factory, dedicating himself to the classic decorations of the "ancient Savona" style of which he was, with Romeo Bevilacqua, among the best interpreters. Having returned from the Great War, thanks to the financial contribution of the lawyer Albarello, he became co-owner and artistic director of the "MAS" (Maioliche Artistiche Savonesi) factory in Albisola Capo. In 1922, after the decommissioning of "MAS", he was hired, together with Ivos Pacetti and Roggiapani, at the newly founded "La Casa dell'Arte" owned by Giuseppe Agnino and the brothers Giulio and Angelo Barile. Around 1925 he collaborated with the Albisola factory "Landa" owned by Ernesto Baccino and directed by Romeo Bevilacqua. From 1925 to 1931 he opened a kiln under his own name, also based in Varazze, where he trained the workers of Bartolomeo Rossi's "CAS". At the end of the 1930s we find him working in the kilns of the Albisola factory for the production of artistic ceramics" MGA" owned by Giuseppe Mazzotti. At the beginning of the 1950s Ravano became a collaborator of Ugo Michielotto at the Albisola-based "Manifattura Ceramiche Italia". Dario Ravano dies in 1961.
