Marc Riboud Biography

Marc Riboud, born on 24 June 1923 in Lyon into a large family, was an internationally renowned Franco-Italian photographer.
His interest in photography emerged thanks to a gift he received from his father in 1937, an old West Pocket Kodak. During the Paris Universal Exhibition, Marc began taking his first photos.
Despite his passion for photography, he decided to join the partisans during the Second World War, between 1944 and 1945, after his father's death. He later resumed his engineering studies in Lyon, working in several local factories. However, in 1951 the passion for the camera and travel began to take over.
1952 was the crucial year for his career as a photographer, as he had the opportunity to meet Henri-Cartier Bresson. In 1953 he entered the prestigious photographic agency Magnum Photos, where he remained an official photographer until 1979.
In each of Riboud's shots it is possible to grasp his profound attention to communication through photography, to the sharing of cultural differences, to the horror of war and to the denunciation of the degradation of repressive cultures. Analyzing the daily life of man in any part of the world and in any situation has been a constant theme of investigation for the photographer.
Marc Riboud passed away in 2016.
