Dante Ricci was born in Serra San Quirico on 20 September 1879. He began his artistic studies at the College of Rieti, then continuing his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome under the guidance of Filippo Prosperi and Dario Querci. However, due to his dissatisfaction with the too academic teaching, he decided to interrupt his studies and dedicate himself to studying from life. The Roman countryside became his great source of pictorial inspiration but also the Pontine marshes up to Terracina, focusing his attention on the characteristic wine carts, the animals of the countryside, the flowers, the rustic shards, the seascapes and the figures, in a lively and pleasantly decorative vision of colours.
Dante Ricci was part of the XXV and Roman Watercolorists group. He obtained the position of drawing and painting teacher for the royal princes Umberto, Jolanda, Mafalda and Giovanni of Savoy, a role he held for over twenty years. Ricci was also a skilled creator of etchings, preferring the chiaroscuro style to accentuate the effect of light and shadow in the plastic dimension of his works. Dante Ricci died in Rome in 1957.
