Jean Paul Riopelle Biography

Riopelle Jean-Paul (Montreal, 1923 - Quebec, 2002) Jean-Paul Riopelle studied painting with Henri Bisson and in 1943 enrolled at the Ecole du Meuble in Montreal. In the same year he traveled to Paris thanks to a scholarship from the Canadian government and the following year to New York, where he met Hayter, Mirò and Lipchitz. In Paris he came into contact with many artists belonging to the informal art movement, such as Georges Mathieu, Wols and Hans Hartung. In 1949 he exhibited at the “Salon des Surindèpendants” and held his first solo show at the Galerie Nina Dausset. He participated in the San Paolo Biennale (1951, 1955) and the Venice Biennale (1954, 1962). In 1958 he obtained special recognition at the “Guggenheim International Award” exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. In the 1970s many retrospectives were dedicated to him, such as that of the Maeght Foundation in Saint Paul-de-Venice in France (1971) or the Museè d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1972).
