Édouard Riou was a well-known French illustrator born on December 2, 1833. He was known for his collaboration with Jules Verne and for creating many other famous works. Riou studied under Charles-François Daubigny and Gustave Doré, earning his degree in 1859. In addition to creating woodcuts, Riou had a great passion for landscape painting and commemorative art.
From 1865, Riou collaborated with Jules Verne, providing drawings for six of his novels, including "Five Weeks in a Balloon". In these works, Riou was able to artistically capture many fantastic places of Verne's imaginary geography, such as mists and ice shelves, shadows within the earth's crust, deserted and extensive beaches, and many bodies of water with their movement.
His artistic style has been defined by Edmondo Marcucci as a "romantic realism". Riou became a member of the Legion of Honor and died in Paris on 27 January 1900.
