The painter, watercolourist and printmaker Louis Marie Dominique Romain Robbe was born on 17 November 1806 in Kortrijk and died in Brussels in 1887. After studying law in Ghent and obtaining his doctorate in 1830, he was a justice of the peace for the canton of Moorsele for 4 years. However, only in 1833 did he decide to dedicate himself completely to painting, taking example from Jan-Baptiste De Jonghe and the animal painter Eugène Verboeckhoven. His influence on painting in Belgium was notable, especially for introducing realism into animal painting. In 1835, Robbe held his first major exhibition in Ghent, receiving much praise in subsequent exhibitions. Many of his works are still in private collections, both in Belgium and abroad, as well as being exhibited in numerous museums. Robbe died in Brussels on 2 May 1887.
