Robert Louis Leopold (La Chaux-de-Fonds, 1794 - Venice, 1835) Louis Leopold Robert was a Swiss painter and engraver. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. He stayed several times in Italy, where he found inspiration for the creation of many works. In 1825 he went to Naples and other Italian cities, where he imagined the representation of the four seasons, divided into four canvases, such as "The return of the pilgrimage to the Madonna dell'Arco". This painting represents Spring in Naples and was purchased by King Louis Philippe I. In 1831 he triumphed at the Paris Salon and with the canvas "The Arrival of the Reapers in the Pontine Marshes" he obtained the cross of the Legion d'honneur, received by the King of France. His last monumental composition was that of the winter season, entitled “The departure of the fishermen of the Adriatic”, an intense work that also inspired Victor Hugo and Lamartine.
