Dorothea Rockburne is a Canadian painter and illustrator.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, Rockburne began her classical training in painting, drawing and sculpture in 1942 at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she studied under the tutelage of abstract artist Paul Emile Borduas. After studying at the Montreal Museum School and graduating from Black Mountain College, she moved to New York, NY. His works initially did not get the right attention from critics, so he chose to devote himself to dance and performance art for several years.
He worked at Rauschenberg's studio, participating in various performances with other artists, including Claes Oldenberg.
His art is inspired by dance and dance movement in space and incorporates elements of mathematics and astronomy. He received many awards and honors during his career, including a National Endowment for the Arts grant (1974), the Witovsky Prize for painting (1976). Rockburne currently lives and works in New York.
