Salvatore Rosa Biography

Rosa Salvatore (Naples, 1615 - Rome, 1673) Salvatore Rosa was an Italian painter, engraver and poet of the Baroque era. In the 1930s the painter was in Rome, where he approached the Bamboccianti School, made up of painters who were followers of Pieter van Laer known as il Bamboccio, who conceived the landscape in an innovative way compared to the academic Roman Baroque. Later the artist entered the workshop of the painter Jusepe de Ribera, known as Spagnoletto, close to Caravaggio's luminism and creator of a dramatic and dark painting. The artist preferred the representation of ugliness, that is, disturbed landscapes with shapeless rocks, cliffs, dry branches. Once he returned to Naples he dedicated himself to the representation of turbulent events, anticipating the romantic style. Some of his works are preserved in important museums, such as the Louvre in Paris or the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
