Francesco Rosi Biography

Francesco Rosi (1922 - 2015) was a director. During the war he was forced to abandon university to start working as an illustrator of children's books. In 1946 he approached entertainment as Ettore Giannini's assistant for the staging of a theatrical work. In 1948 he was assistant director to Luchino Visconti for the film "La terra trema". His directorial debut was in 1958 with "The Challenge" which received the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and was well received by the public. In 1961 with "Salvatore Giuliano" he retraces the life of the famous Sicilian bandit, inaugurating the genre of investigative films which enjoyed great success, so much so that he was considered the most important Italian director who dedicated himself to civil cinema. Despite not using actors famous to the general public, the film was an immediate success. In 1963 he won the Golden Lion with "Hands on the City", a film denouncing the collusions existing between the various powers of the State. Other investigative films are "Il Caso Mattei" (1971) and "Lucky Luciano" (1973). In 1978 he created "Christ Stopped at Eboli" based on the autobiographical novel by Carlo Levi. In 1987 it was the turn of "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" based on the novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, where his daughter Carolina also directed. In 1990 he brought Edmond Charles-Roux's novel "Forgetting Palermo" to the screen and in 1996 "The Truce" by Primo Levi.
