Antonio Rotta Biography

Antonio Rotta is an Italian painter born in Gorizia on 28 February 1828. During his youth he attended artistic studies in his hometown, discovering his talent for the fine arts. He subsequently moved to Venice, where he was accepted at the Academy of Fine Arts and was part of the training circle of the teacher Ludovico Lipparini.
Antonio Rotta tried to create some works with historical and religious subjects without, however, abandoning the genre painting that he himself loved to approach.
Antonio Rotta's fame consolidated over the years, both nationally and internationally, thanks to his participation in the most important artistic exhibitions in Europe, such as those in Milan, Berlin and Paris. Precisely in this city he received a prestigious award in 1878, confirming the respect and admiration of the artists of the time.
Antonio Rotta married the daughter of the Bergamo painter Lattanzio Querena and from this union his son Silvio Giulio was born, who continued his father's artistic career.
Among the most famous works by Antonio Rotta are "Chioggia boy wearing his first clerical dress", "The little daughter of the hunter" and "The vegetable garden". Among the historical paintings, one of the most important is "Titian instructs Irene of Spilimbergo", which won a prize at the Venetian Academy.
Antonio Rotta died in Venice on 10 September 1903.
