Reuven Rubin, born in 1893 in Galati, Romania, was an Israeli painter famous for being a pioneer of Israeli art. His works display lively color combinations and earthy tones, with simple artistic techniques that recall Marc Chagall. Through these features, Rubin explores Israel's biblical landscapes and popular history. He often depicted the countryside and its inhabitants, transforming his observations into dreamlike scenes thanks to his unique vision. Rubin achieved international recognition as one of Israel's first artists. He studied art in Jerusalem and then in Paris, but during the First World War he had to return to Romania. In 1921, he went to the United States and organized his first American exhibition with the support of Alfred Stieglitz. In 1924, he held his first solo exhibition in Jerusalem. In the 1930s, he devoted himself to designing theater sets. From 1948 to 1950, he was the official Israeli envoy to Romania. Rubin died in 1974 and his home is now the "Rubin House" Museum which houses his works.
