Giuseppe Ruoppolo was born in Naples in 1629. Here, he attended painting studies under the teachings of Paolo Porpora, who trained him as a still life artist together with other contemporary artists such as the versatile Salvator Rosa. Ruoppolo painted his canvases with dark backgrounds, similar to several of Caravaggio's works. Although the quality of his works is high, the lack of precise information about his works has made it difficult for experts to reconstruct his profile. Furthermore, the homonymy of his initials with the artist Giuseppe Recco further complicated the situation. During the first years of his artistic career, Ruoppolo had many artists of reference, the most important of which was his uncle Giovanni Battista. Ruoppolo's still life production covers a wide range of objects, from large fruit compositions to small groups of courgettes, tomatoes and flowers. Many of his works are preserved in the Correale Museum of Terranova and the San Martino Museum in Naples. Ruoppolo died in Naples in 1710.
