Mark Rydell is an American director, producer and actor born on March 23, 1929. Initially interested in music and conducting, he later studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse theater school in New York and played several roles on television, becoming popular in role of Jeff Baker in “As the World Turns”. In 1962, Rydell refuses to sign a new contract with the soap opera and his character dies in a car accident. He then moved on to direct television series, such as Mr. Novak, Ben Casey and Gunsmoke, before making his debut as a film director in 1967 with “The Fox”. He directed several successful films, including "The Rose", for which he received an Oscar nomination as best director and two films of which he was executive producer, "Crime of the Century" and "James Dean", became television programs. During career, Rydell continued to teach acting and directing at the Actors Studio, where he collaborated with Martin Landau and Lyle Kessler.
