Ryder Chauncey Foster (Danbury Connecticut, 1868 - Wilton, 1949) Chauncey Foster Ryder was an American painter. Ryder studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Acadèmie Julian in Paris under Jean Paul Laurens. He has often been associated with the artistic movement of Post-Impressionism and his works lean towards abstraction, without completely giving up portraits. His use of green and gray soon earned him the nickname Ryder Green in his paintings. He devoted himself to both oil paintings and watercolors and opened studios in New York and New Haven. He is represented by over 50 museum collections and during his career he was awarded several gold medals, both for his oil paintings and watercolors. Some of his awards are from the National Academy, the 2015 Panama-Pacific Exposition, the National Arts Club, the American Watercolor Society.
