Giuseppe Sabatelli Biography
Giuseppe Sabatelli was born in Milan on 24 June 1813. From a young age he demonstrated a strong artistic ability, so he learned painting techniques under the guidance of his father. In 1834, together with his older brother Francesco, also a painter, he moved to Florence. Here, Giuseppe continued to develop his technique and was noted above all for his ability to paint sacred and historical subjects, but also as a portraitist. Among his numerous works with a religious background, Giuseppe completed the cycle of the chapel in Santa Croce, creating the painting "Saint Anthony resurrecting a dead man" on canvas, starting from the cartoon created by his brother Francesco. Furthermore, he also dedicated himself to profane subjects, as demonstrated by the painting "Torquato Tasso", commissioned by the American Meredith Cholune and preceded by a series of drawings. From 1839, Giuseppe Sabatelli taught painting technique at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. However, his talent was cut short prematurely by tuberculosis, which led to his death at just twenty-nine years old, on 27 February 1843, again in Florence.
