Luigi I Sabatelli Biography
Luigi Sabatelli was born in Florence on 19 February 1772. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence in 1784 and, in 1788, moved to Rome where he formed relationships with important artists and patrons, such as the Cavalier Tommaso Puccini. During this period, Sabatelli approached the Accademia dei Pensieri, founded by Felice Giani in 1790, which gave centrality to drawing and gave the opportunity for afternoon meetings with important personalities such as Vincenzo Camuccini, Pietro Benvenuti and Koch.
While living in Rome, Sabatelli made many drawings of Trajan's Column, where he managed to extract faces and details, which were later used as a model for other works. Later, with the financial help of Marquis Capponi, he left for Venice, where he studied the typical tonalism of lagoon art. He taught at both the Florence Academy and the Brera Academy in Milan, with the collaboration of Francesco Hayez. Luigi Sabatelli died on 29 January 1850 in Milan.
