Lino Sabbatini Biography

Lino Sabattini (1925 - 2016) was the pre-eminent figure in modern Italian silver and metal design. His vast and diverse body of work is characterized by its strength and boldness, whether in dynamic forms that suggest the drive and power of Italian Futurist art and design or in light and sinuous biomorphic tableware and decorative objects. Working in the same vein as his friend and mentor the architect Gio Ponti, founder of Domus magazine, Sabattini was interested in merging neoclassicism with modernist and minimalist aesthetics. Born on September 23, 1925 in Correggio, Italy, he studied metalworking while working in a brass shop as a teenager, and later learned ceramics from an expatriate German craftsman named Rolando Hettner. Sabattini continued to work in Paris and Milan for the Christofle company, eventually founding his own company, Argenteria Sabattini, in 1964. Today his works are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others. Sabattini lived and worked in Bregnano, Italy.
