Eliseo Sala was born in Milan in 1813. He studied at the Brera Academy under the guidance of Luigi Sabatelli until 1837. Subsequently he moved to Venice to perfect himself and then to Rome, where he became friends with Francesco Coghetti. From him he learned the delicate neo-Venetian chromaticism and updated his classical academic tendencies. Starting in 1837, he began to exhibit at the Brera Academy, dedicating himself to historical and sacred paintings, but above all to portraits. Due to the presence of the Austrians in Milan, from 1849 to 1856 he moved to Turin, where he worked mainly for the Savoy but continued to participate in the Brera exhibitions. Eliseo Sala had close ties with Lombard and Piedmontese families, obtaining many commissions. In 1872 he was part of the organizing commission of the second National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Milan. Eliseo Sala died in Rancate di Brianza in 1879.
