Sander August (Herdorf, 1876 - Cologne, 1964) August Sander was a German photographer. He learned his first photographic techniques by assisting a photographer, who worked for the mining company. He soon set up his own darkroom and began his artistic career working in a photography studio in Linz, later becoming its owner. He subsequently opened a studio in Cologne and later took a trip to Sardinia, where he took 500 photographs, creating a real diary of his travels. Sander published his first book “Face of our Time” in 1929, with a series of 60 portraits, taken from the “People of the Twentieth Century” series. In the following decade he dedicated himself to photographs of landscapes, nature, architecture, but above all portraits.
