Alessandro Sanquirico (Milan, 27 July 1777 - Milan, 12 March 1849) was a famous Italian set designer, architect and painter.
As an architect, he participated in the construction of numerous theaters in various Italian cities, including the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Teatro Alberti in Desenzano, the Teatro Sociale in Canzo, the Teatro Sociale in Como and the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza. With the collaboration of Andrea Appiani and Bargigli, Sanquirico also created the Arena of Milan.

Alessandro Sanquirico Biography

Alessandro Sanquirico (Milan, 27 July 1777 - Milan, 12 March 1849) was a famous Italian set designer, architect and painter.
As an architect, he participated in the construction of numerous theaters in various Italian cities, including the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Teatro Alberti in Desenzano, the Teatro Sociale in Canzo, the Teatro Sociale in Como and the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza. With the collaboration of Andrea Appiani and Bargigli, Sanquirico also created the Arena of Milan.
However, Sanquirico became particularly known for being an important stage designer of his era. In particular, he is remembered for the sets created for the famous dancer Salvatore Viganò.
Sanquirico also collaborated as a painter on the decoration of the Milan Cathedral, painting the vaults simulating a Gothic tunnel, and created numerous city views of Milan.
Sanquirico's engravings were published by S. Stucchi in the years 1819-1824 and 1827. The sketches and watercolors of the shows he worked on are today preserved in Milan, at the Museo Teatrale alla Scala and the Civica Raccolta delle Stampe A. Bertarelli.
Alessandro Sanquirico died in Milan on 12 March 1849.
