Leonardo Santo, born in 1949 in Reggio Calabria, undertook a project of "Financial Self-Destruction" within Mail Art between 1971 and 1980. This project consisted of the de-functionalization of money through an action and its subsequent redistribution by postal means. From 1974 to 1980 he collaborated with the 16/e studio in Turin, of which he was also a founding member. He concluded this phase of research by participating in the XVI Biennial of Sao Paulo in Brazil. In the 1980s, Santo theorized and put into practice an artistic work based on common everyday objects and their contrasting relationships. In this phase, he developed and surpassed objectualism. The commonly used object was replaced by one in carved wood, combining forms of different materials with the artefact which gradually became pictorially transfigured. Since 1990, Santo has concentrated his research on painting. He was a teacher of pictorial disciplines and of the Free School of the Nude at the Primo Liceo Artistico in Turin. Currently, he lives and works in Turin.
