Richard Sapper (Munich, 30 May 1932 – Milan, 31 December 2015) was a German designer and academic, active almost exclusively in Italy. Considered one of the most important designers of his generation, the creations express a combination of technical innovation, purity of form with reliefs of wit and surprise. He received the prestigious Compasso d'Oro 10 times from 1960 to '98; another career achievement in 2014. His creations have been exhibited in several museums, including the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Much of the activity was linked to the city of Milan. He had the opportunity to interact with leading professional figures after the Second World War. In 2014, with the Compasso d'Oro Lifetime Achievement Award, Sapper will be identified as a "national" awardee.
