Michele Giuseppe Scaglia Biography

Giuseppe Michele Scaglia was a well-known Italian painter, born in Canale d'Alba, Cuneo, in 1859. He attended the Accademia Albertina in Turin, where he followed the figure courses of E. Gamba and the painting courses of A. Gastaldi. Furthermore, he studied the landscape technique inspired by the work of A. Fontanesi.
In the period between 1880 and 1884, Scaglia lived in Paris, where he worked for the art dealer A. Goupil and participated in the Salons. During his career he participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Turin National Exhibition of 1884 ("Portrait of the Author") and the Milan Permanente of 1892 ("Macchietta").
The painter preferred to represent scenes of everyday life, reproducing them faithfully and sometimes with an anecdotal touch. He shared a passion for rural and hunting subjects with his painter friend GB Quadrone.
Scaglia maintained friendly contacts with other important artists of the time, including G. Grosso, for whom he painted a portrait which is now preserved in a private collection. He died in Turin in 1918.
His death occurred in Turin in 1918. His art remains today a fundamental example of nineteenth-century Italian realism.
