Domenico Scattola was born in Verona in 1814 and was self-taught until, at the age of twenty, he found his first teacher in the painter L. Muttoni. In his first exhibitions, he mainly presented portraits such as the "Portrait of the Brother" exhibited in 1835 in Verona and "The Romantic", exhibited in 1839 in Verona together with "Hagar and Ishmael in the Desert" at the Gallery of Modern Art. In 1839 he moved to Milan, where he was influenced by F. Hayez and created works with a romantic flavor such as "Odalisque" and "Juliet before taking the sleeping pill".
After taking part in the Milanese insurrection of 1848, Scattola's painting concentrated on contemporary subjects, taking inspiration from the production of the Indunos. In fact, he created scenes of modern custom with a social, didactic and moralizing content such as "The poor father of the family returning from work".
Scattola's works depicting interiors and historical subjects still maintain references to seventeenth-century Dutch painting and the Hayezian lesson.
Domenico Scattola died in Verona in 1876.
