Oskar Schlemmer (Stuttgart, 4 September 1888 – Baden-Baden, 13 April 1943) was a German painter and sculptor. From the time of its foundation, he joined the Bauhaus in Weimar (later he was in Breslau and Charlottenburg), directing the culture and theater section there.[1] His Triadisches Ballet, with original mechanical inventions of a surrealist flavour, had great success and many repercussions in the German theater scenography which he had tried to reform to give full emphasis to the purity of the human figure. From the time of its foundation, he joined the Bauhaus in Weimar (later he was in Breslau and Charlottenburg), directing the culture and theater section there.[1] His Triadisches Ballet, with original mechanical inventions of a surrealist flavour, had great success and many repercussions in the German theater scenography which he had tried to reform to give full emphasis to the purity of the human figure. In painting, starting from a cubist syntax, he developed a style between classic and purist similar to that of the School of Paris and found the happiest symbiosis of architecture-painting in the wall paintings called Mauerbild; in the last decade of his activity he arrived at a rigorous purist abstractionism.
