Josef Schmitzberger was a German painter who dedicated himself to portraying hunting subjects, animals and landscapes. He was born in Munich on 28 January 1851, and received his first artistic education from his father. From 1868 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Monaco.
After his training he received various commissions in Munich as a painter of hunting, animals and landscapes. He exhibited his works in the Glaspalast in Munich. His paintings have appeared several times in the magazine "Gartenlaube". Schmitzberger was a member of the Munich Artists' Association.
He created animal images for the ceiling of the Blue Hall of Herrenchiemsee Castle.
He died after 1936 in his hometown.
