Henry Schouten (Indonesia, ca. 1857 - Brussels, 1927) was a Belgian painter primarily known for his animal and landscape works. He also used the pseudonym Joseph Klaas. He trained at the Brussels Academy (1876-1881) and was strongly influenced by the animal painter Alfred Verwee.
Schouten was primarily a skilled and realistic animal painter. He also painted scenes with shepherds, farmers and hunters. There are also several still lifes with flowers or birds and fruit or still lifes with fish and shrimp done by him.
He exhibited in Brussels from 1882 with the Union des Arts. Throughout his career, he has used various stage names: Jos Klaus, M. Claes, Joseph Klaas, E. Meulat Joors, V. Marinus, J. Remis, and Van Dam[1].
He had a contract with the Belgian department store chain "Innovation" (now Galeria Inno), for which he produced a large number of works under several pseudonyms.
