H.a. Schult Biography
HA Schult (1939 - ) Born in Parchim, Germany, in 1939, Hans-Jürgen Schult is an artist, best known for his activities in action art. He grew up during the Second World War, which had a lasting influence on his work, and from 1958 to 1961 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Many of his works were performed in collaboration with Elke Koska, who is considered his muse, and later with the actress Brigit Froehlich and the violinist Anna Zlotovskaya, with whom he currently lives in Cologne. In 1969, Schult attracted worldwide attention with his artistic intervention Situation Schackstrasse, which consisted of covering an entire street in Munich with rubbish, for which he was arrested by the police. But that was just the beginning; the project grew as Schult found other locations in the city to stage the happening. In the 1970s he moved to New York, marking a turning point in his artistic career, as the city was the epicenter of the contemporary art world at the time. HA Schult was one of the first artists to address ecological imbalances with his work and is currently an ardent activist in the ecology movement. His works, including Flügelauto, Trash People, Hotel Europa, Trees for Peace and Love Letters, are exhibited around the world. In 1972 and 1977, his Biokinetische Landschaft (Biokinetic Landscape) was exhibited at Documenta, one of the world's leading contemporary art exhibitions, held every five years.
