Franz Schuster Biography

Franz Schuster was born on 26 December 1892 and was an Austrian architect and furniture designer. He attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna with Heinrich Tessenow, where he also collaborated on a municipal program for the construction of workers' houses after the First World War. He designed a small row of houses in the Viennese suburb Laaer Berg. During this time, he developed his stackable modular furniture. In 1928, Schuster began working with Walter Knoll in Stuttgart. Between 1930 and 1931, he significantly expanded his range of furniture for state-built and owner-occupied homes, to include suitcases, tables, chairs and shelves. In 1927, Schuster moved to Frankfurt and from 1928 to 1933 was the head of the housing and interiors class at the Städel School. From 1933 to 1936 he served as general secretary of the International Housing Union in Frankfurt. Schuster collaborated with Ernest May to create a line of rationalist furniture suited to the small size of the homes May designed. He was appointed professor in 1950. Schuster died on July 24, 1972.
