Born in Messina, he was one of the founders of modern paleontology, with the work "Vain speculation disillusioned by meaning". Painter, he was the author of portraits, still lifes and landscapes. He completed his apprenticeship in Rome with Andrea Sacchi. His main client was the prince collector Antonio Ruffo and certainly the works present in his rich collection (portraits of Homer, Aristotle and other philosophers and scholars of the past painted by Rembrandt, Guercino and Ribera) influenced Scilla's activity. At the beginning of the 1970s, he painted "Ester and Ahasuerus" and "Rebecca at the well" for Ruffo, today preserved in the Regional Museum of Messina.
