Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott Biography

Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott (23 October 1865 – 10 February 1945) was a British architect and artist. The son of a wealthy Scottish landowner, he initially studied at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, but once he graduated in 1885 he decided to study architecture. He studied briefly in Bath, but his architectural development was particularly marked by the 12 years he spent on the Isle of Man. Early in his career, Scott worked with Fred Saunders, with whom he had studied at the School of Isle of Man Art. He later left Saunders and opened his own business at 23 Athol Street, Douglas. In 1894 he proposed a design that featured a large central room with a hearth fireplace between the living room and dining room separated by folding screens. Thanks to the creation of this "ideal house", many commissions followed.
Scott developed his “Arts and Crafts” style, which evolved into a simple form of architecture, relying on the truth of materials and functionality, as well as craftsmanship.
Scott was known for the work he devoted to both the exterior and interior of buildings, as well as their decoration. He created nearly 300 buildings over the course of his career.
