Francesco Segala was born in Padua in 1535 and was an Italian sculptor. During his career, he worked mainly in the city of Venice, where he learned the art of sculpture in the workshop of Jacopo Sansovino. In this city, he created a statue of the Baptist for the baptismal font, located in the Church of San Marco. Subsequently, he moved to Padua, where he created a bronze Saint Catherine for a stoup in the Basilica of Sant'Antonio. For some years, Segala worked at the Gonzaga court of Mantua. In 1579, he created, for Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga, the wooden ceiling and some sculptures of the Gonzaga marquises and their wives for the Hall of the Marquises of the Large Apartment of Castello in the Palazzo Ducale. Francesco Segala died in Padua on 14 May 1592, leaving behind a great artistic legacy in the world of Italian sculpture.
