Enzo Sellerio Biography

Enzo Sellerio (Palermo, 1924-2012) Enzo Sellerio was an Italian photographer and publisher. He graduated from the Faculty of Law, but in the meantime he approached photography. In 1952 he took part in a public photography competition and won his first prize. His first shots were published in the magazine "Sicilia", a periodical created by his friend Caruso. In 1955 he published his first reportage “Borgo di Dio” in the photo documentaries of Cinema Nuovo and was soon considered one of the masterpieces of Italian neorealist photography. He held his first solo shows in Rome at the Galleria dell'Obelisco (1956), at the Galleria la Bussola in Turin (1960) and at the Triennale in Milan. In the 1960s he began a collaboration with the Swiss magazine "Du", thus appearing on the panorama of international photography and in 1962 he was called to join the EMP (European Magazine Photographers), an association that brought together some of the best photographers of 'Europe and promoted good photography. He also began a collaboration with Vogue as a freelancer in Paris and New York, for which he photographed various artists and intellectuals such as Christo, Arthur Miller, Saul Steinberg. In 1967 he began to deal with publishing, collaborating with the Sicilian Regional Assembly for the editing of texts for the magazine "Cronache Parlamentari", which spoke of ecclesiastical and secular power. Subsequently these texts were brought together in a book and from that moment Sellerio decided to dedicate himself only to publishing together with his wife Elvira Giorgianni.
