Giovanni Giacomo Sementi Biography

Giovanni Giacomo Sementi was born in Bologna on 27 August 1583. He received his professional training in the Emilian city by working in the workshops of the Flemish Denys Calvaert and Guido Reni. In the early years of the century he began a fruitful collaboration with his colleague Francesco Gessi and master Reni, dedicating himself to the creation of numerous works for public and ecclesiastical purposes. Between 1615 and 1620, Sementi collaborated with Gessi and Bartolomeo Marescotti under the direction of Reni for the creation of the frescoes of the chapel of the Sacrament in the cathedral of Ravenna, commissioned by Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini. Sementi participated in the decoration of the dome, plumes and pillars. In addition to his activity as a painter, Sementi also practiced the art of drawing, following the academic conception of Reni, who considered drawing the foundation of art. In fact, Reni's drawings were used as models by his students; Sementi himself exploited the master's graphic inventions in his paintings. Sementi died on 8 September 1636.
