Francesco Semino was born in Genoa in 1832. From an early age he demonstrated a predisposition for painting, so much so that at the age of twelve he was admitted to the Accademia Ligustica in Genoa as a pupil of Giuseppe Isola. He made his debut at the City Promoter in 1850, immediately showing an interest in the historical genre, following in the footsteps of his teacher. In 1857, Semino moved to Florence to complete his training, here he frequented the Caffè Michelangelo and became friends with several Macchiaioli painters. Although most of his production is of a historical-literary and sacred nature, his experience with the Ligurian Gray School influenced his landscape painting, innovating it with the study of nature and its luminous and chromatic effects from life. From 1861 to 1865, Semino settled in Rome and upon his return to Genoa in 1867 he was appointed Academician of Ligustica. From this moment on, his career was mainly attributable to the fresco decorations of numerous palaces and churches in Genoa. Francesco Semino died in his hometown in 1883, aged just 51.
