Pierre Senties was born on 23 February 1801 in Paris. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1817, following the lessons of Baron Gros and Regnault. In 1825, he exhibited his first works at the Lille Salon: "The Death of Alcibiades", "Santa Marta", "A young huntress" and "A young woman listening to her canary". His political interest manifested itself with a "Scene of 29 July 1830" exhibited at the Salon of 1831. The painting, now preserved in the Louvre, depicts a contemporary historical event with a heroic style typical of great historical painting, highlighting the artist's debt to comparisons of David and Gros and their portraits of Napoleonic triumphs. In 1833, Senties exhibited five portraits at the Salon, as well as a painting of a young beggar expressing his social sympathies. He died in Dieppe on 30 November 1875.
