Luigi Serena Biography

Luigi Serena, born in Montebelluna in 1855, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice from 1870 to 1877. Initially he adopted a Macchiaiolo and impressionist style, demonstrating a strong interest in reality and light. Later, having moved to Treviso in 1878, he abandoned pure realism to dedicate himself to genre painting. He often portrayed humble subjects represented in episodic habitats of everyday life. His technique has always been extremely careful, it is possible to notice his attention to lighting and color rendering. He was very skilled at making portraits, but usually used a less bright and more serious palette. However, he chose a darker brushstroke for the paintings of his later years, some of them with social or sacred meaning. Unfortunately, at the age of thirty, the painter was struck by an illness which gradually prevented him from continuing his artistic career. He participated less frequently in exhibitions because he was isolated and in poverty. In 1907, he was able to participate in the I Esposizione d'arte trevigiana, but he died in Treviso in 1911.
