Luigi Serra Biography

Luigi Serra was born in 1846 in Bologna and attended the Venturoli Artistic College of Bologna starting from 1858, continuing his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. In 1866 the pensioner Angiolini won, allowing him to stay in Florence for two years to improve his skills. In this period, stain painting was very widespread, but Luigi Serra, despite frequenting the artists of the Caffè Michelangelo, was not influenced by it. On the contrary, in Florence he studied the Tuscan fifteenth century in depth, acquiring drawing rigor and chromatic clarity. Luigi Serra won another three-year pension which allowed him to move to Venice until 1877. Here he inevitably approached the painting of the Venetian fifteenth century and in particular Vittore Carpaccio. Returning to Rome, Luigi Serra did not remain indifferent to the artistic demands promoted by Nino Costa and In Arte Libertas. He was very active in public commissions which he faced with strong spiritual and civil involvement and reached the peak of his expression between the Seventies and Eighties. Still at the height of his intellectual and pictorial activity, Luigi Serra died in his native Bologna, at just 42 years old, in 1888.
