Serritelli Giovanni (Naples, 1810-1880) Giovanni Serritelli was an Italian painter, specialized in the creation of ports and large ships and sailing ships. In the 19th century, a taste for the pictorial representation of the sea developed and, following the examples of the Dutchman Anton Sminck van Pitloo and Giacinto Gigante, Neapolitan painters began to specialize in the representation of gulfs and light effects. Serritelli trained at the Royal Institute of Art and his paintings are characterized by views that expand horizontally and by the presence of characters, which give life to lively costume scenes. Serritelli was chosen by the Bourbons as the official painter of events, creating important works, such as "The launching of the Pirofregata Archimede in the Port of Marseille" and "The rectification of the course of the Sarno river", preserved at the Royal Palace of Caserta. Serritelli, in fact, made his debut in Naples in 1841 and from that moment became the official court painter and master of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, focusing above all on subjects of public and private life. The artist became an important historical source for the knowledge of customs in urban and landscape contexts.
