Cindy Sherman Biography

Sherman Cindy (Glen Ridge, 1954) Cindy Sherman is an American artist and photographer famous for her conceptual portraits. She studied art at SUNY Buffalo, where she was a classmate of Robert Longo. Initially he dedicated himself to painting, portraying copies of photographs taken from magazines, but later he dedicated himself completely to photography, transforming it into a means of self-expression with which to carry out investigations into mass communication. Sherman was against considering art too religious and sacred and was also obsessed with constantly changing her identity. Thus it was that in 1975 he composed his "Series", composed of five photographs, which portray the artist in the guise of different characters. The following year Sherman moved to New York, where she began working on the production of black and white images, entitled “Untitled Film Stills” which made her known throughout the world. From that moment the artist began to create series of untitled photographs, depicting herself in the most disparate roles. He received his first recognition in 1995 from the art establishment and subsequently MoMA in New York purchased the “Untitled Film Stills” photographs for one million dollars. He reached the peak of his fame two years later, when MoMA decided to organize an exhibition with the purchased photographs, in which Madonna was also among the sponsors. Now Cindy Sherman lives in New York, where she is also dedicating herself to the production of images related to Surrealism.
