Takahashi Shu Biography

Shu Takahashi (1930 – 1987) was born in Hiroshima in 1930. In 1950 he moved to Tokyo and, despite his mother's opposition to his artistic aspirations, entered the Musashino Academy of Fine Arts. In his country he formed the "Art Nouveau Group" together with other artists, aimed at a revolutionary visual language. In 1956 he held his first solo exhibition. He received the Dokuritsu Prize, and his "Way to the Moon" was purchased by the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, which awarded him the Yasui Prize for new artists. Takahashi's move to Italy in 1963 was a major turning point in his career. In Rome, he developed his own artistic language by painting simple shapes in primary colors. He made himself known in Italy and since 1969 established a stable relationship with the Galleria dell'Ariete in Milan. He took part in the Venice Biennale in 1976 and the Rome Quadrennial in 1977. Among his exhibitions were the Retrospective at the GNAM in Rome (1993) and the Spirit of Gold Exhibition 2003-2004 at the Edoardo Chiossone Oriental Art Museum in Genoa. In 1987 he received the Art Encouragement Prize of the Ministry of Education and the following year the Japan Arts Grand Prix. In 1996 he taught at Kurashiki University of Sciences and Arts.
