Gustavo Simoni Biography

Gustavo Simoni was born in Rome on 5 November 1845. He was an Italian painter and teacher who traveled intensively starting in 1877, going to France, Spain and Africa, in particular Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. He settled for many years in the ancient city of Tlemcen in Algeria, in an isolated house where he welcomed friends who came from Rome. His fame grew among collectors and connoisseurs and in 1889 he won the Gold Medal at the Paris Salon with the monumental painting “The Fire of Persepolis”. In 1895 he was awarded again at the Fine Arts Exhibition in Rome. In Rome he opened a school of orientalist painting. Simoni was an orientalist painter attentive to detail, capable of capturing the thrills of an environment and fixing the memory of an instant. He painted genre scenes in Palestrina and Sorrento, with a profusion of characters rendered with great liveliness but in delicate colours. He was part of the ten founders of the Association of Roman Watercolorists and exhibited his watercolors at the exhibitions organized by the Association. Simoni died in Palestrina in 1926.
