Hunt Slonem (1951 - ) The art of American painter Hunt Slonem is notable for combining representational imagery with abstract expressionist interpretations. He is best known for his vibrant paintings of tropical birds, butterflies and rabbits and is widely considered a key figure in the Neo-Expressionist movement, which also includes Julian Schnabel and Georg Baselitz. Slonem's wry sense of humor and entertaining paintings sometimes feature multiples of the same subject in a loosely arranged grid. Born in Kittery, Maine on July 18, 1951, Slonem later attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine under Alex Katz and Alice Neel after earning a bachelor's degree in art and art history from Tulane University in New Orleans . The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, among others, have collections of Slonem's work. He works and resides in New York.
