Ed Sommer (1932 - 2015) worked in his father's metalworking factory, later also became a designer (1948–1965). He is a self-taught artist. He began creating abstract painterly reliefs in 1959, later creating thermoplastic printed acrylic glass and collage sculptures. He was a representative of the Op Art movement. Guest student under Max Bense at the Technical University of Stuttgart and Abraham A. Moles at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm (HfG) between 1966-1969, he became German correspondent for the magazine »Art International« . He was represented with some films as a participant in the Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972. From 1977 to 1985 he created his symbolic gestural images and in 1980 his first projection photographs.bFrom 1989 to 1991, Ed Sommer and his wife, the artist YongSa, have been involved in human rights projects in the Tian Anmen and Art for a Free Tibet projects. Since 2002 he has mainly created literary works. He lives in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The exhibitions in which he took part are: 1964, »Mouvement 2«, Galerie Denise René, Paris. 1966, “Ed Sommer.
